Why does cashmere require such special care?
Cashmere is a rare natural fibre, sourced from the undercoat of goats living in extreme climates. Its fineness, lightness and warmth make it an exceptional textile. Each goat produces only a few dozen grams of usable fibre per year, which explains both its rarity and high cost.
But with delicacy comes fragility. A wash at the wrong temperature, rough handling or hasty drying can easily turn a soft jumper into a coarse or misshapen garment.

The right wash: it all begins with gentleness
At La Sirène, we recommend hand washing, in cool to lukewarm water, using a gentle soap (without harsh chemicals or artificial fragrance).
Our method:
- Turn your garment inside out.
- Let it soak in clear water for a few minutes.
- Swish gently—never rub or twist.
- Press lightly to remove water, without wringing.
For localised stains, apply a natural solid soap carefully to the mark before rinsing. If in doubt, or if the stain persists, it is best to entrust your piece to a professional.
Drying: patience and respect for the fibre
Cashmere dislikes radiators, tumble dryers, or direct sunlight. These heat sources can damage the fibre, alter the colour, and cause shrinkage.
The proper way: lay your garment flat on a clean towel in a dry place, away from heat. Reshape it while still damp, and let it dry naturally.

Storage: avoiding bad habits
Cashmere should never be hung up. Even padded hangers can mark the shoulders or stretch the knit.
Always fold and store flat, in a clean drawer or on a shelf. For longer storage, place the garment in a breathable cotton bag.
Protecting your cashmere from moths
Natural fibres such as cashmere are a delight for moths, which are drawn to the proteins in the wool.
Natural protection tips:
- Wash garments before storing them.
- Use lavender, thyme, clove, or rosemary sachets.
- Place natural cedarwood blocks nearby, refreshing them now and again with a drop of essential oil.
If infestation persists, a specialist deep clean may be necessary.

Pilling: how to minimise it
Pilling is a natural reaction to friction, often under the arms or along the sides. It does not mean your cashmere is poor quality.
Use a soft brush or cashmere comb to gently remove the bobbles without pulling. A light stroke is enough to restore a smooth and refined surface.
Re-knitting: our invisible repair service
A snag, a hole, or a pulled thread should not mark the end of your favourite jumper. At La Sirène, we offer an expert re-knitting service an artisanal technique that repairs damaged stitches invisibly.
Every repair is carried out by hand. Colour, thread thickness, tension each detail is considered to restore the original look. This rare skill allows your cashmere pieces to live on, with their elegance intact.
